The Pontine Islands
The paradise for the tourist, it is not always thousands and thousands of miles away. The traveler does not always have to cross oceans to find its oasis. In this case he will just have to get to our beautiful capital city and head for the coast. A small paradise “tropical” outside the gates: the Pontine islands, namely Ponza, Ventotene, Palmarola, Santo Stefano and Zannone. Often, in the course of history, the islands were used as prisons of confinement. The first to use them in this sense was the roman emperor Octavian Augustus, which segregò his daughter, Giulia, Ventotene. The Bourbons, later, they built even a prison on the island of Santo Stefano, while during the dictatorship the fascist many awkward characters were confined to the island of Ponza and Ventotene.
The enviable natural location, fabulous coves, colourful rocks, the jagged inlets, groups of rocks and the seabed, with immaculate make of this archipelago a unique place of rare beauty. The typical houses of the marinade, the simple, the warm colors, and locations of artisans valenti and inns where you can taste delicious recipes of fish, soften and relax the look. The largest of the islands is Ponza, with its three thousand and five hundred inhabitants. Its port is the nerve center of the entire archipelago, will dock ferries, hydrofoils, but also luxury boats and yacht giant. The pastel colors of the houses attract the sight of the visitor, while the Sun regenerates. The localities of the island most popular are Giancos, The Forna and the Santa Maria. Moored offshore or near the coast line, you can also enjoy a sun bath at the beach of Chiaia di Luna, overlooking the sea and in the less known, but equally spectacular, the Cliffs and the Faraglioni di Lucia Rosa. Not to be missed an excursion to the Caves of Pilate and those of St. Francis.
At 4 miles there is the second largest island of the group, Palmarola, “our Palm Beach”, as they say in the indigenous.Spectacular, completely uninhabited, Palmarola has only a few inlet. The entire island is a catalog of rocks, sea stacks, caves and natural arches. The water is transparent, and varies from emerald green to blue more intense. Is two kilometres long and a half-only four hundred meters. Treat yourself to some time at Cala Brigantina, where a wall of tufa stone has been carved by the imagination of the wind.
Ventotene has an appearance quite different from the companions, in fact, has a different geological composition. It is formed by a vast plateau, which in some points descends gently toward the sea.
To the north of the island there is the centre of the town, with its picturesque, colorful streets and its stone arches, with domed roofs and the beautiful church of Santa Candida, with the villa that he built Augustus, the daughter-Giulia. The tufa dug out from the winds makes the coastal landscape of the surreal, as dissolved.
The variety is the slogan of the archipelago: you can take a bath at Palmarola, eat in Ponza unforgettable dishes, shopping in the boutiques of the centre, or get lost in the alleys and the magic of Ventotene, all in a single wonderful vacation.
